I haven't been able to learn AE yet, but I don't think adobe applications differentiate from each other a whole lot. They use the same methods as to layerings, maskings, channels, and so and so. I can't wait to pick it up soon, at least just getting the hang of animation in AE. You are right about the droplets, it looks like it was imported from Illustrator. As for the spinning globe, it's probably stop-motion since you can tell by the slow frame-rate if not then it's 3D. The spinning space ship is also stop-motion too. Look again closely!
